Marvel slots dispute with Cryptologic

Cryptologic Ltd., a global developer of online slots, casino games and software has announced in a press release that they have started arbitration proceedings against Marvel Enterprises Inc. and Marvel Enterprises B.V. through their wholly owned subsidiary, WagerLogic Ltd.

According to the press release, WagerLogic claims that Marvel has “committed material breaches of certain provisions of its agreement with WagerLogic Ltd. relating to the licensing of Marvel comic book characters to WagerLogic Ltd.”. The release goes on to say that they have tried to resolve the issue without resorting to arbitration but “have been left with no alternative to taking this step to protect its licensing rights and commercial interests.”

The industry is rife with speculations on why Cryptologic has started the arbitration process; the most common theory appears to be Marvel’s tie up with Playtech. According to the original Cryptologic deal with Marvel in 2005, the former was to be the sole developer of Marvel-branded casino slot games on the internet. Until 2008, Cryptologic went on to release a total of 17 online slot games based on the original Marvel Comics characters.

In March 2009, Playtech signed a licensing agreement with Marvel to create a range of Marvel slots based on popular superhero characters and went on to launch a series of online slot games including X-Men, The Incredible Hulk, Blade, Daredevil, Elektra, Iron Man and Fantastic Four. These games very soon captured the imagination of slots players world wide as did the superior graphics, sound and animation.
