The winner of the Mega Millions lottery which was hit for $266 million has been identified as an employee of an NBC affiliate, NBCLA in Los Angeles. The winner, however, has requested anonymity, not wishing to be identified.
The winning Mega Millions ticket was for the draw on Tuesday, 4th May and was sold by a Hawaiian Barbeque chain restaurant in Pico Rivera, California. The $266 million cash prize is the eighth largest win since the lottery was launched in 2002. The winning numbers were 9, 21, 31, 36, 43, and the Mega number was 8. In total there are nine prizes including the Mega Millions jackpot and twenty eight other players will be sharing a prize pot of $1.2 million.
Alex Traverso, a spokesman for Mega Millions said that it was not unusual for big lottery winners to want anonymity as large wins can attract unwarranted attention in the form of begging letters from strangers, unsolicited interest from the media or even long lost relatives who mysteriously appear hoping for a hand out. The Mega Millions $266 winner joins the list of many who have won massive jackpots with America’s biggest lottery.
A lottery winner who had won big with the Mega Millions game had some advice for the unidentified winner. Mary Morrison who had scooped $165 million spoke to ABC news, "The person needs to figure out who is going to watch their money, because it's a lot to handle if you don't have the right team," she said. “It's a gift from heaven and you have to pass it on.”
Mary, who is a massage therapist, won the lottery with her psychotherapist husband Richard. The couple had been married for forty years when they won the lottery and decided to use a portion of the money for good causes. Using the services of an accountant as well as a lawyer, the couple set up a charitable foundation though they did splurge on some luxuries for themselves and their six children.
