UK National Lottery receives prestigious award
Camelot was recently recognised for maintaining high standards of responsible gaming by the European Lotteries Association (EL). The certification presented to Camelot, operator of the UK National Lottery, recognises the operator’s responsible gaming programme which is aimed at preventing excessive and underage play. Camelot is only one of 14 operators who have been presented with the certification to date.
The EL’s Responsible Gaming Certification Framework assesses performance in areas such as research, employee training, sales force programmes, game design, remote gaming channels, advertising and marketing, player education, stakeholder engagement and reporting.
Dianne Thompson, Camelot’s Chief Executive and chair of the EL Responsible Gaming Commission since 2005 said, “I’m delighted that Camelot has achieved certification by the European Lotteries Association. As the operator of the UK National Lottery, we exceed our already stringent regulatory requirements in setting and maintaining the highest standards of responsible play in the UK. In my position as Chair of the Responsible Gaming Committee, I would like to encourage other lotteries to do the same.”
The UK National Lottery runs several popular lotteries including Lotto, Thunderbird as well as instant win games and operates the EuroMillions lottery in the UK. Ms. Thomson said, “At Camelot, sustainability is at the heart of our business. We work hard to ensure that National Lottery sales continue to grow in a socially responsible and sustainable way, so that even more money is raised for the Good Causes.”
Ms. Thomson explained that on an average, lottery players in the UK spend only £3 a week which, according to her, highlights the success of Camelot’s strategy of encouraging people to play while spending relatively little which is confirmed by the fact that the UK National Lottery is the sixth largest lottery in the world in terms of ticket sales and yet, is ranked just 64th in the world in terms of per capita spend.
