The UK National Lottery which hosts the EuroMillions lottery in the UK announced that a record breaking number of millionaires were created in the year 2010. The National Lottery issued a press release stating that a massive 158 players joined the very exclusive Millionaires' Club in 2010 which was 26 players more than the previous year.
A National Lottery spokesman said: "This has been an extraordinary year for our players with so many new millionaires and multi-millionaires created." The lottery paid over £775 million in jackpot prizes alone which was up by £285 million on 2009 – creating a new record for the highest amount paid out ever in one year.
2010 was a record breaking year for EuroMillions lottery players starting with the enormous £56 million win by Nigel and Justine Page who won their jackpot in February. This was followed by two even bigger wins, the first one in May of £84 million followed by a £113 million in October by two anonymous EuroMillions players.
In August of 2010, 19 players became millionaires while October saw players winning a combined payout of over £167 million. On Christmas Eve, the UK lottery players who play the EuroMillions had 25 chances of winning £1,000,000 with the Millionaire Raffle which typically guarantees a millionaire every week. The National Lottery spokesman has confirmed that as of now a total of fifteen winners have claimed their prize money. In October, the National Lottery created a new record of creating over 2,500 millionaires since its inception 16 years ago.
